Abstract

This perspective summarizes the different uses of social media data for public health surveillance and such data’s strengths and limitations. Social media-based surveillance systems can be used to monitor information, detect outbreaks, forecast disease trends, monitor emergency situations, and monitor general disease awareness and reactions to official health communications.
